Gravel and rocks hitting metal announced Tommy’s car siding up next to the ATV. The slamming of the door announced his imminent approach. They heard the crunch of his boots as he navigated around the obstacles toward the barn. JJ pulled Jo a bit closer for reassurance.

“Hi, Tommy. Glad you could find time for us.”

Tommy pulled off his Stetson and bounced it off his leg. “JJ, what the heck are you two up to now? What Jo said on the phone made no sense, which usually means a new problem.”

“Come inside. We’ll explain what we can.”

Tommy tromped in next to JJ. They stopped as he gazed into the open footlocker. “Where in tarnation did that come from?”

“The best news I have, Tommy, it was under the freezer on the left side. See those broader indentations we didn’t disturb at the back, where the freezer rested.”

Tommy nodded raking his hair with his fingers.

“We removed the dirt around until JJ spotted the green, then he created the slope in the front to move it out. We were together the whole time.” Using her hand, Jo crossed her heart with her eyes focused on Tommy. “Honest.”

JJ’s heart swelled with appreciation for his bride standing up for them.

Tommy walked around the box, gauging it from each angle. “Tell me the steps you took in detail while I think of what we’re going to do next.”

“I was jumping around playing air hoop basketball. When I took a shot and landed, I heard a sound change. I jumped several more times until I decided to find out what was below. Seriously, I thought maybe it was an access point to a root cellar.” JJ took a breath. “We worked the dirt loose. The tarp was tied on. The string holding it is underneath now. I cut it and peeled back the tarp. I didn’t have gloves on, Tommy so my prints will be all over it.”

Tommy frowned. “Who would have a root cellar that would need regular access, put a freezer on top of it, needing a crane to move it? No matter, fingerprints wouldn’t be on the fabric anyway. Go on.”

JJ recounted the preceding events in detail until he took a breath.

“That’s when I called you, Tommy,” Jo said.

“We stepped away and waited for you,” confirmed JJ.

“So, you never touched anything inside, correct? The stacks look federally banded but not bank-specific.”

“There could be other presidents in there.”

Tommy shook his head. “Oh, brother.” He put his hat back on and handed Jo his keys with one in particular sticking out. “Can you open my trunk? JJ, let’s drape the cover over this and we’ll take it back to my office. No one else is on duty today.”

JJ watched Jo scamper off to the police car before turning his attention back to the task at hand.

The men hoisted the box. “It weighs less than sixty pounds,” Tommy commented. “Just awkward.”

They secured the item into the police cruiser. JJ did a short explanation about Hank and Ann going to the hospital.
